I didn't realize how much American culture and holidays affect other countries around the world until Oct 31 in Chile. I was walking back home from work, and I see a lot of little kids dressed up. I always thought that the closest holiday to Halloween that Latin American countries celebrate was All Saints Day. I found out depending on which country, Halloween is celebrated more like the United States, with custom shops around every corner and trick or treaters asking for candy. This is the case in Santiago, Chile.
This tradition is fairly new, my host sister was telling me that when she was about twelve years old the concept of giving out candy was fairly new and starting up. I began to think, how all the trick or treating was done due to all the homes that have fences. As I began to walk around the neighborhood, I would encounter huge masses of little kids, each dressed up as soccer players, princesses, super heroes and much more. What I didn't see was decorations. There were only a couple of houses that were decorated and of those only one house actually permitted kids to enter to take pictures with the decorations. I found this very intriguing, kids would ring a door bell outside of a house and hope that someone walks out with a bowl of candy, or the home-owners would just sit in front of their house waiting for the little monsters, to come by. There was a part of me that wished these little kids could experience all of the Halloween decorations of the United States. I feel like their little minds would be blown away by how it is celebrated compared to them.
